Victoria Sackville-West writings and commonplace book, 1910-1961.

Papers consist of writings and a commonplace book and related material. The Writings series includes research notes and drafts for a history of the Medieval and Renassiance Italian states, entitled "The City-States of Italy, from 1300 to 1500," and drafts of plays and poems. There are drafts of nine plays, one poetry collection, Orchards and Vineyards (1921), one notebook with drafts, and over fifty individual poems, arranged alphabetically by title, dating chiefly from the 1930s and 1940s. For several poems there are multiple drafts, some corrected, and printed versions. The commonplace book consists of copies, excerpts, and quotations from literary sources dating from the sixteenth to mid-twentieth century, in Sackville-West's hand, along with a few printed clippings pasted in. Loose material removed from the commonplace book includes copies of poems, manuscript notes, clippings, and printed ephemera.
